MF DOG FOSTERING / INTAKE
Fostering may not change the world; but it will change the world of every dog fostered. (...and maybe it can also change our world <3 )
MFDR operates solely out of foster homes and does not maintain a facility. If you have room for a dog in your home, it is one of the best ways that you can volunteer!
We rely on our foster homes to give our dogs endless love, basic needs, and in-home structure, until we can find their forever families. Foster homes usually keep their dogs for several weeks to several months until they are adopted. We also have the need for temporary or holiday fosters!
We generally receive requests for help from local veterinary clinics, animal shelters, and private homes from the local community (Radford/Blacksburg, Virginia). We then reach out to our available foster homes (or post on social media in a cry for help when we're out of homes) with information on the dog(s) and their situation while requesting if anyone is available/willing to take on the dog(s) in need. We attempt to match our foster dogs with compatible homes to give them the best chance of blossoming in foster care.
Other times, if we have an influx of foster homes or a special interest, we can pull dogs from surrounding shelters in need.
Our intake/foster team personally meets and assesses all of our new dogs prior to intake. They always perform a detailed behavior test including a physical exam, dog-test, and personality screening (medical exceptions only). Unfortunately, we are not able to take on any dog that has shown human or dog aggression (very few exceptions). Our intake ability is limited, but if you have a dog you'd like us to consider, please email us with detailed information and wait patiently for a reply.
